We at Williams, McClernan & Stack are proud to once again offer free legal assistance to those seeking Maryland expungements at our upcoming Expungement Clinic on Friday, February 21, 2025, at the Lexington Park Library. For many individuals, a criminal record—no matter how old or minor—can create barriers to employment, housing, education, and even family opportunities. Expungement provides a legal way to remove eligible charges from public records, giving people the chance to move forward without the stigma of past mistakes holding them back.
Why Expungement Matters
A criminal record shouldn’t be a lifelong sentence to limited opportunities. Expungement can help individuals and families by:
Opening Doors to Better Jobs: Many employers conduct background checks, and a record can be a deciding factor in hiring decisions. With an expungement, individuals can confidently apply for jobs that match their skills and aspirations.
Increasing Educational Opportunities: Many graduate programs are highly competitive, and a record can be the deciding factor between equally qualified candidates, expungement can remove that obstacle.
Expanding Housing Options: Landlords often review court records before approving tenants. A clean record can make it easier to secure safe and stable housing.
Supporting Family Growth: A criminal record can be a barrier for those looking to foster or adopt children. Expungement can remove this obstacle for families hoping to expand.
Lifting the Weight of Stigma: Beyond the legal and financial implications, carrying a criminal record can have a lasting emotional toll. Expungement allows individuals to move forward with confidence and dignity.
Our Commitment to the Community
Since opening our firm, we’ve hosted an expungement clinic every year as part of our ongoing commitment to serving Southern Maryland. These clinics provide an opportunity for individuals who qualify to navigate the expungement process with legal guidance at no cost. Through partnerships with organizations like the St. Mary’s County Library and St. Mary’s County Health Department, we’ve been able to extend this service to more people in our community, helping them take steps toward new opportunities.
