Prepare your playlists and load up the snacks because today is National Road Trip Day!
AAA expects 39.4 million people to travel this year between Thursday and Memorial Day. Road trips are a cherished tradition. Whether it’s a scenic drive down the coast, through national parks, or making your way to Grandma’s house, the journey can be as memorable as the destination. There are a few legal reminders about how to make your family's road trip as safe and memorable as possible.
Before Leaving Home
Car Seats: If you have young children, make sure they are sitting in the appropriate seats whether infant carriers, five point harnesses, or backless boosters. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has information about choosing the correct seat, how to install it correctly, and how to receive updates regarding safety recalls. Check them out at: https://www.nhtsa.gov/vehicle-safety/car-seats-and-booster-seats It's also important to note that each state has different rules.
Car Insurance: Each state has car insurance minimal requirements. Ensure that your insurance is active and meets the minimum requirement for the state your car is registered in. For Maryland, information can be found with the Motor Vehicle Administration here: https://mva.maryland.gov/vehicles/pages/insurance-requirements.aspx
License: Check to make sure your license is not expired and is still valid. Driving without a license is a crime. The penalties can range from fines to time in jail.
Registration: Check to make sure your car is currently registered with your state. Expired registration can lead to heavy fines.
Obey the Rules of the Road
Not only do you need to know the rules of the road for your state, but each state or country you drive in. Some examples are:
Don't Drink and Drive: In Maryland, it is illegal to drive with a blood alcohol level (BAC) higher than .08. In Utah, you cannot drive with a limit higher than .05.
Right on Red: Not all states/cities allow turning right on a red light. Make sure you know the rules so you don't end up with a ticket.
Speed: Depending on your speed above the limit can land you a simple ticket in one state and a charge of reckless endangerment in another.
Where will you be headed?
We here at Williams, McClernan, & Stack plan to travel over the weekend. Some of us are just going to friends and families to enjoy a cookout, others are traveling farther away. What are your plans?

We should also remember
While adventure awaits this weekend, we should remember to honor those who have died in service to our country in the United States Military. So on Monday, take a moment of quiet to thank those who have come before us to secure our freedom to have journeys filled with discovery, laughter, and lasting memories.
